New 25% Section 301 Tariff on Brazil — What Jewelry & Gemstone Importers Need to Know
On July 15, 2026, the United States Trade Representative (USTR) announced a new 25% tariff on certain goods of Brazil under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, effective July 22, 2026 at 12:01am ET. Following a year-long investigation, the administration determined that certain Brazilian policies unreasonably burden or restrict U.S. commerce.
This tariff is separate from the two other ongoing § 301 investigations (forced labor and excess structural capacity) and stacks on top of the prior 10% § 122 global tariff, which expired on July 24, 2026.
Effective Rate on Brazilian Goods
The new 25% § 301 tariff applies to most goods of Brazilian origin. For jewelry and luxury goods importers, this means finished pieces, settings, and components sourced from Brazil may now carry a significantly higher duty burden.
Exempted Product Categories
The following product categories are exempted from the new 25% tariff:
- Precious stones (other than diamonds) and semiprecious stones, unworked or simply sawn/roughly shaped
- Gold bullion, dore, powder, and semimanufactured gold forms
- Platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, osmium, and ruthenium (unwrought and semimanufactured)
- Monetary gold and coins
- Precious metal articles in rectangular/near-rectangular shapes containing 99.5%+ precious metal by weight
- Other articles of gold and metal clad with gold
- Precious metal ash, waste, and scrap
Note: Finished jewelry, jade, jadeite, and set gemstone pieces are not among the exempted categories and may be subject to the full 25% tariff.
